Boredom and Occupational Therapy : A literature review

Abstract
Objective : This study reviewed the literature on boredom to examine the factors that cause boredom, the health effects of
boredom, the measures to measure boredom quantitatively, and the boredom in occupational therapy research.

Methods : In Pubmed, Psyinfo, CINAHL reviewed the literature from 2007 to 2017 using the search term ¡®Boredom¡¯, ¡®Orcupational therapy¡¯ and ¡®Occupational Science.¡¯

Results : The factors that make up boredom consist of attention, time perception, mood and fatigue, arousal level, agents, and ideas that are not related to work. Boredom has multidimensional characteristics due to these various factors. The boredom caused by these factors has a negative impact on health, such as increased autonomic nervous system excitement, low autonomic nervous system excitement, negative emotions, cognitive functioning, behavioral disorders, and negative experiences. Occupational therapy also occurs boredom due to lack of meaningful occupation, deprivation of occupation, disproportion, and deprived environment. There are 16 assessment tools to measure these boredom, and they are divided into tools that can evaluate the trait boredom (7) and state boredom (9).

Conclusion : In this study, we examined the factors that cause boredom, the effect of boredom on health, the measure to measure boredom quantitatively, and the boredom in occupational therapy research. Based on this review, we expect that
more active intervention will be possible for the boredom patients are experiencing in clinical settings in Korea.
